Our Academy Aim

Our Aim: Read this first!

Playing a musical instrument is a wonderful thing. It feels so good!

Hearing yourself playing a song you like, learning something new and seeing your skills grow is a really positive experience.

Music is also a wonderful tool for developing focus, discipline, mental stimulation, fine motor skills and memory.

At the Musago Academy, we have one goal: To help people learn music and enjoy it.

Here’s how we do it…

What we offer:

  1. Group classes during public school term periods in our professional teaching rooms.

  2. An ever growing student portal with supportive material online.

  3. Core booklets and systemised lessons using our graded armband levels.

  4. Additional materials, challenges and activities when the academy is closed to keep you progressing, inspired and having fun.

  5. A simple monthly membership price that is predictable and affordable.

Group classes:

This is where you learn with your teacher, alongside other students of similar age or ability. We’ve found that learning music in small groups is a great way to learn music.

Here’s why:

  • Seeing other people learn what you’re learning is motivating and reassuring.

  • Music is meant to be shared. Think of bands, orchestras, audiences, open mic nights, assemblies, or even streaming services like spotify. Learning an instrument in a group is a sharing experience.

  • Make new friends.

  • We incorporate group activities like instrument warm up drills, rhythm exercises, playing songs together, jamming to backing tracks and drum loops.

  • Being part of a group helps with motivation and accountability. We find people practise more if they are part of a group.

  • Performance opportunities. By playing songs in your group, gradings and things like class videos, you get the chance to play in front of others (for those who want to).

Student Portal & Online Materials:

Consider this:

  • What if I’m sick or away?

  • What if the teacher is sick, or the power goes out?

  • What if it’s a public holiday or the academy is closed for the term break?

  • What if I need a bit of extra help with a tricky exercise we did in class?

  • What if I want to practise with backing tracks?

This is why we offer the lesson portal and a free Musago Theory account as part of your membership. It’s like getting your lessons twice!

  • We invest a lot of time and energy into building the portal. Offering you this alongside your classes is an incredibly valuable tool.

  • Part of your fees goes to the development and creation of the academy lesson portal and online materials, which every student benefits from.

  • Inside the portal are lesson handouts, video tutorials, backing tracks, drum loops and more. We’re adding more all the time.

  • Free Musago Theory account, so you can learn contemporary music theory through animated videos, quizzes and worksheets. There are over 140 lessons in here, and the possibility to be accredited externally via SCSM International. This can also include TCE for levels MCA Grade 2 and above.

*Please speak to your teacher if you want to know more about this. Your teacher can set this account up for you upon your request, or when the teacher identifies a good time for you to start.

Lesson Booklets and Armbands:

Your membership also includes:

  • Core lesson booklets, which have all the graded material for your level. Some additional books may need to be purchased as you advance.

  • Embroidered Academy armbands.

When the Academy is closed:

Given that we teach students of all ages, and there are times when the academy is closed. We plan our calendar as follows:

  • We operate during public school terms (Or from the Monday of when public schools go back.)

  • We are closed during public holidays with some exceptions. See our annual calendar for more information.  Reasons why we close are:

  • People are often away in large numbers, making the classes difficult to run.

  • You can consolidate your skills and ‘catchup’ if you feel you’re a little behind.

  • Teachers can develop new lesson material or add content to the portal.

When we are closed we can provide you with some optional extras to your normal class lessons, such as:

  • Portal Items

  • Extra exercises

  • Song snippets

  • Theory lessons

  • Inspirational material

  • Academy projects

  • JAM-uary:

JAM-uary

You might think January is a ‘nothing’ month. Not for us.

We know that many people are away at various points in January, but we want to help you keep your musical momentum. This is when we do some fun extras, such as:

  • Practice competitions with prizes

  • Epic ‘all in’ academy projects (remote, online, video exchange)

  • Topical extra lesson materials and mini series

  • Suggested portal and theory lessons

  • Non-instrument activities

  • Curated items, like inspirational youtube links or song recommendations.

  • And more!

January is an amazing time to improve your music skills, because it is often when many other commitments stop. We want you to keep your momentum over this month and that’s what JAM-uary is all about. The extras we do over this month are delivered remotely, so you can participate when it suits you - That’s the whole idea.
