RSL BOOKS INFO
As our students advance, we bring in the Rockschool (RSL) music books to go alongside our learning material. This is where you can find information relating to these books. We'll add to this and update this over time.
How To Slow Down The Play-Along Tracks
Learning a new song can be tricky when the backing track is too fast! Fortunately, Rockschool's online tools allow you to slow down music so you can practise at a comfortable speed.
Here's a video to show you how
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1 – Visit RSL Backstage
Open your internet browser and visit the RSL Awards website.
Sign in to your RSL Backstage account. If you don't have an account yet, you'll need to create one.
Step 2 – Find your Rockschool book
Once logged in, locate your Rockschool book or digital learning resources.
If you haven't registered your book yet, you may need the unique code printed inside your book to access its accompanying materials.
Step 3 – Open your song
If your book includes access to the interactive RiFF music player, open it and select the song you want to practise.
Step 4 – Slow down the music
-
Find the tempo or speed control in the music player.
-
Move the tempo slider to reduce the speed.
-
Try starting at 70% or 80% of the original speed.
-
Press Play and practise along with the music.
Step 5 – Gradually increase the speed
Once you can play the song comfortably, increase the speed a little at a time.
For example:
-
70% – Learn the notes and rhythms.
-
80% – Build confidence and accuracy.
-
90% – Get closer to the original speed.
-
100% – Play along at full speed!
BONUS TIP – Repeat the tricky parts!
The interactive player also allows you to loop sections of music. This means you can practise a difficult section repeatedly without restarting the whole song.
Remember!
Playing slowly and accurately is better than playing quickly with lots of mistakes.
Take your time, enjoy the process, and gradually build your speed. You'll be surprised how much easier a song becomes with regular practice!
